Algiers is the largest city (and also the capital)of Algeria. The number of inhabitants in the wider Algiers area is estimated at over 5 million.

Algiers is sometimes reffered to as "al-Bahjah" meaning "the White" due to the large number of white buildings. The name Algiers is thought to mean "the islands" in reference to the 4 islands off the coast of the city.

The city is divided into the new quarter, centered around the bay and the old quarter, which rises above the bay on the hillside above, where the traditional Kasbah sits.
