Alabama, was a relatively poor area of the USA up until the end of the Second World War. Following the war, the state's economy diversified from agriculture into areas such as manufacturing and high tech, and prospered as a result. More recently the state has thrived on aerospace and automotive industries.

Alabama is referred to sometimes as "The Heart of Dixie" or the "Yellowhammer state". Whilst the state capital is Montgomery, the largest populated area is in Birmingham.
