Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland. It is referred to both as the Granite City and the Silver City, due to the large amount of granite used in the buildings in the city, the colour of which is said to be silver in certain lights. The city is also known as Europe's Oil Capital as a result of the North Sea oil fields.
Archeological evidence points to communities dating back to 6000 BC,in the form of small villages around the rivers Dee and Don. The name Aberdeen derives from the celtic "Aber" meaning the mouth of a river And "Dee" referring to the river itself.
The city has two universities, the University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495, and the Robert Gordon University, which was awarded university status in 1992.
The dominant industries in Aberdeen are the North Sea oil industriy and the Aberdeen seaport. These have replaced more traditional occupations such as fishing, ship making and textiles.
That is not to say Aberdeen is a predoinantly industrial city, since it has beautiful gardens and public parks, and has won the "Britain In Bloom" competition 10 times!
