The Rhodope Mountains
Over 83% of its area are on the Bulgarian territory, the remaining is in Greece. It is located in the most southern part of the country. With its highest peak- Golyam Perelik (2191m) it occupies the 7 th place among the Bulgarian mountains. The Rhodope Mountains are some of the oldest mountains in Bulgaria. The Karst areas are very interesting with their deep river gorges, large caves and specific sculptured forms – Trigrad Gorge, the caves Devil's Throat, Uhlovitsa, Yagodinska, the Wonderful Bridges. The climate is influenced both by the colder air coming from the North and by the warmer breeze from the Mediterranean. The mountain is about 220 km long and about 100-120 km wide with an average altitude of 785m. The best coniferous woods in Bulgaria are in the Rhodopes. 15 reserves have been established, some of these are included in the list of UNESCO. There are many mineral water springs, the most faumous are in Velingrad, Devin and Narechen. The Pamporovo resort is an excellent example, where the microclimate permits a fat snow cover to be preserved for a long time – a real Paradise for skiing.

The resort
If you love skiing and winter sports in general, Pamporovo is the place where you can spend unforgetable moments on the snow tracks. Pamporovo, the pearl of the Bulgarian mountain resorts, is situated in the heart of the Rhodopes, some 260 km away from the capital Sofia, 85 km to the south of Plovdiv and 15 km from Smolyan. Just a single day on the ski track is enough to provide you with lovely sun tan, because this place is considered one of the sunniest highland resorts in Bulgaria where the number of sunny days is over 240. The climate is mild and with great Mediterranean influence. The altitude of the resort is 1.650 m, the highest peak Snezhanka is 1.926 m
